The faces of some pledges were covered with pie Thursday night at Phi Delta Theta. Members and pledges took a break from playing Guitar Hero to be smacked in the face with pies for pictures. Fraternity president Chad Watkins said he’s been please with the turn out so far. He said the first few nights of rush, around 40 people visited Phi Delta Theta, and that they are meeting a lot of people who are really dedicated to joining the fraternity.
“This is a huge year for us because think we’re building something special for the years to come,” said Watkins, a WCAS junior.

Luck was hopefully a Lady Thursday night at Sigma Chi as the fraternity held “Casino Night.” Craps, Roulette, and card games were among the entertainment offered, with plenty of chips to spread around. McCormick sophomore Justin Liu said he has a lot of friends at Sigma Chi, and a lot in common with the people he doesn’t yet know.
“I did rush last year, went to other houses. I idn’t really get that same vibe that I did here,” he said. Soon the room was emptied, dice left unattended, as the members rushed outside to celebrate a new pledge and lift him in the air.

Everything’s OK at the Zeta Beta Tau House corral tonight. Frat members cajole each other and new freshman into riding the mechanical bull taking over their living room. McCormick junior Colin Jamieson, a member of ZBT, managed to hold the stirrups for a couple of minutes before he was thrown to the ground.
“(Rush) has been lots of fun,” he said, grinning. “A lot of freshman have been coming through so there’s been a lot of people to meet. It’s a fun process.” Moments later, a roar of commotion sends everyone in the house outside to cheer on a new pledge. Hoisting the bid-dropper, brothers shout their chant which echo into the chilly night air.

Night two of Rush 2008 - As loud music starts blaring from all corners of north campus, the fun part of Rush 2008 begins. Stomachs full, the fraternity members crowd around the poker table in the Phi Delt house, waiting for potential pledges to arrive. In the hour or so after dinner, the Phi Delts have transformed their living room into a gladiator ring. Bracing himself against the blows from Music sophomore Adam Seidel, the newly recruited Michael Beadle, a Weinberg freshman, paces around the ring, seemingly exhuberant after dropping his bid. The fun atmosphere masks the important goal that lies ahead for these brothers: recruitment. –Paul Takahashi
